To build our way to the stars, we will require far more efficient resources than we have now. As the fourth most abundant element in the universe (and indeed the second most in the human body), carbon is a near-endless and highly-adaptable resource. By developing our understanding of carbon's properties and limits, we have become able to manipulate it at a molecular level. This will enable the creation of ever more impressive, yet ever more affordable, building materials and structures - both here on Earth and, eventually, throughout the galaxy.
