About Electromagnetic Propulsion
Electromagnetic Propulsion is a Terra Invicta technology in Energy with a research cost of 1,500.
Physicists design rockets that use electromagnetic fields to accelerate propellant.
Classic rockets throw a volatile mix of chemicals together and ride the reaction through space, an effective but inefficient and risky system of propulsion. But we have other forces at our disposal, and it is to electromagnetism that we now look instead. We propose to use this force to accelerate ions - or potentially larger masses - to generate thrust. Ultimately these systems can provide an extremely efficient form of travel, preventing the need for vast sums of propellant and tankage, but at a cost of the high thrust available to chemical rockets. These systems offer the potential to put the near planets and asteroids within reach.
