By applying energy evenly across the surface of its fuel pellet, high-energy lasers force the outer layer of the fuel to explode, meet its resistance, and reverse its direction inwards. The resultant compression shock waves compress the fuel to the point of creating a fusion reaction. Interestingly, our biggest strides in this field were not in the reaction itself, but in adapting materials to contain the fusion reaction over the long term.
