Since the invention of the device for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, otherwise known as the laser, in 1960, our scientists have developed many ways to harness the power of light. Now, we have reached another milestone in the history of lasers: the first infrared combat laser. This weaponized laser system uses tightly-focused, extremely intense infrared light pulses to burn through most known materials. It is only due to the coherence - both in space and time - of laser light that we are able to bundle it so efficiently. These lasers use solid-state crystal rods to generate ultra-short pulses of infrared light. Through laser seeding technology, in which we use a smaller laser to shape the larger laser pulse, we can generate reliable infrared pulses with the same power output. Even though laser systems can be precisely aimed, the infrared light dissipates over long distances, making this weapon most effective in short to medium range combat. Due to the long wavelength of infrared lasers, they are not very effective within our planet's atmosphere. However, our scientists see the potential for new combat laser designs using visible light in our future, which would significantly increase their versatility.
