Neutronics

Neutronics — Terra Invicta technology. Physicists develop ways to deliver neutrons where they are wanted and keep them out of places where they are not.

About Neutronics

Neutronics is a Terra Invicta technology in Materials with a research cost of 15,000.

Physicists develop ways to deliver neutrons where they are wanted and keep them out of places where they are not.

Neutrons - neutral subatomic particles that along with protons and electrons make up most atoms in the universe - have their uses. Beams of neutrons can trigger nuclear reactions that propel our spacecraft and also serve as weapons. But many fission and fusion reactions also produce wild neutrons that are a danger to the humans relying on those reactions. Powerful new computers have enabled us to model neutron behavior with precision previously unavailable to us. This in turn lets us build new devices to control them, and lightweight shielding to protect fragile life from them. We also see pathways to the ultimate prize: trapping and storing ultracold neutrons for long periods of time, preventing their usual rapid decay. This would allow us to use them as extremely efficient catalysts, but we'll need to develop new understandings of materials science before we can proceed.
