We track signs of alien activity to attempt to determine why they are abducting humans.
Having uncovered evidence of multiple livestock abductions some time before the first correlated human disappearance, it would seem that the aliens have been observing us long enough to understand Earth's biological and social hierarchies. In short, they have steadily worked their way up the food chain. By analyzing patterns - the species, locations, the frequency, the subtlety or lack thereof, the proximity to settlements - of recent disappearances, we can now paint a clear picture of their methodology.
