We seek to convince the aliens that a peaceable solution is the only possible solution.
Any realistic chance of talking the Hydra down - i.e. ending this war through neither violence nor subjugation - required breakthroughs on multiple fronts. The first was designing a weapon that could frighten even them. On this we have succeeded - at least in theory. The second was convincing our only still-wary captive to convince his kin that their current path leads only to mutually-assured destruction. Our intentions remain peaceable, but in order to achieve that, we have had to comport ourselves with a certain aggression.
